Mandelbrot Node

By Kriss Norde

The Mandelbrot node generates a visual pattern based on the famous Mandelbrot fractal. Infinite zoom, self-similar detail at every scale. Ideal for sci-fi motion graphics, abstract backgrounds and futuristic titles.

Overview

Mandelbrot creates an image from the mathematical fractal of the same name. Each pixel is computed by iterating a complex formula - the number of iterations before divergence gives the color.

Advantages:

  • Infinite zoom - detail visible at every scale (no pixelation).
  • Hypnotic animation by animating Zoom or Iterations.
  • No visible repetition (unlike tiled textures).

Where to find this node

  • Effects Library: Tools > Generator > Mandelbrot
  • Quick add: right-click in the Node Editor → Add Tool > Generator > Mandelbrot

Inputs

  • Effect Mask (blue) - optional. Limits the fractal generation to an area.

Setup

Mandelbrot → Merge 2D (or as a mask, or a displacement source)

Noise tab (shape of the fractal)

Position X / Y
Starting point in the complex plane. Moves the "camera" to explore different areas of the fractal. Fine coordinates around (0, 0) to see the classic set.
Zoom
Magnification factor. Unlimited in practice - you can zoom indefinitely into the edges of the set to reveal ever more detail.
Escape Limit
Sets the value at which the iteration stops. Low values create soft halos around the shapes; high values give crisp edges.
Iterations
Number of calculations per pixel. Higher = more detail, especially at the edges. Animating it simulates the set "growing" progressively.
Rotation
Rotation of the pattern. Recomputed on every angle change - slow when combined with a high Zoom.

Color tab

Gradient Method
Type of gradient used to color the fractal edges.
Continuous Potential
Smooth gradient mode: the edges of the pattern fade into the background color. A smooth look, ideal for abstract renders.
Iterations Mode
An alternative that produces solid edges (distinct color bands depending on the number of iterations reached).
Gradient Curve
Adjusts the width of the transition between the pattern and the background.
R / G / B / A Phase / Repetitions
Per-channel parameters for color generation. Animating the Phase values produces a psychedelic color cycling effect.

Use cases

  • Sci-fi title - a Mandelbrot animated in Zoom + Rotation as the background behind sci-fi text. An instant "mathematical infinity" look.
  • Abstract motion graphics - animate the Phase of the RGB channels for a hypnotic color cycle.
  • Intro / logo reveal - a fast zoom into the Mandelbrot set, revealing the logo at the end.
  • Displacement / distortion source - the fractal as the input of a Displace 2D for a self-similar organic distortion.
  • Complex mask - a threshold on a fractal = a mask with fine detail that would be impossible to draw by hand.
  • Conference / exhibition background - a gentle Mandelbrot loop = an "intellectual" background that catches the eye without distracting.

Tips

  • Zoom gradually into the edges of the set - the most visually interesting areas are at the edges of the central "beetle". Explore (−0.7, 0), (0.3, 0.6), (−1.4, 0) with a progressive Zoom.
  • High Iterations = slow render - 100 iterations are often enough. 1000+ gives extreme detail but is expensive.
  • Animate the R/G/B Phase from 0 to 1 over the length of the shot = a full pulsing color cycle.
  • Continuous Potential for a modern look, Iterations Mode for a retro/8-bit look.
  • For a smooth zoom, animate Zoom with a very long ease (exponential curve) - the log10 of the Zoom evolves more naturally than a linear value.
  • For a static hypnotic effect, keep Zoom fixed + animate Rotation slowly.
