sStar Node

By Kriss Norde

sStar generates an N-pointed vector star. The key Depth parameter controls the inner radius - from 0.001 (a very thin star / spike) to 1.0 (a regular polygon). Motion graphics uses: burst graphics, sparkles, ratings (★★★★★), award icons, decoration.

Overview

sStar is the fourth primitive shape of the Shape system. It defines a star with two concentric radii: an outer radius (tips of the branches) and an inner radius (the hollows between branches, controlled through Depth).

Versatile: Points = 5 for a classic star, but also 4 for a sparkle/ninja star, 8 for a burst graphic, 12+ for complex decorations.

Where to find this node

  • Effects Library: Tools > Shape > sStar
  • Quick add: right-click in the Node Editor → Add Tool > Shape > sStar

Inputs

  • No input required - a pure generator.

Setup

Classic 5-pointed star:
sStar (Points 5, Depth 0.5) → sRender → Merge 2D FG

Sparkle / glint:
sStar (Points 4, Depth 0.1) → sRender → Glow → Merge Screen

Burst graphic (exploding rays):
sStar (Points 12, Depth 0.3) → sTransform (animated Angle) → sRender → Merge

Ratings ★★★★★:
5 × sStar → sMerge (offset positions) → sRender → Merge

Controls tab

Points
Number of branches. 4 (sparkle), 5 (standard star), 6 (hexagram / Star of David), 8 (burst), 12+ (radiating).
Depth
Inner radius (depth of the hollows). See the dedicated section. Typical values: 0.1 (thin branches), 0.5 (classic), 1.0 (a polygon with no hollows).
Width / Height
Dimensions. Width = Height for a symmetrical star.
Angle
Rotation around the center. Typically 0° = first branch pointing right; -90° = first branch pointing up (an "upright" star).
Offset (X / Y)
Position of the center.
Solid
Filled or outline.
Border Width / Border Style
Thickness and style (Bevel/Round/Miter) of the outline.
Length
For outline write-ons.
Position
Position of the start of the stroke along the outline (if Length < 1).

Depth: the key parameter

Depth ≈ 0.001 (minimum)
An almost zero inner radius. The branches are extremely thin, almost lines. A sparkle / twinkling star / glint look.
Depth ≈ 0.3-0.5
A classic star. Most icons and logos use this range. The branches are visible and distinct from the center.
Depth ≈ 0.8
A "rounded" star with subtle hollows. A soft modern look.
Depth = 1.0
No hollows - the equivalent of an sNGon with as many sides as 2×Points. The star becomes a regular polygon.

Animate Depth from 0 to 1 = a smooth morph between a star and a polygon. A powerful visual effect in motion design.

Style tab

  • Fill Color - the fill color.
  • Border Color - the outline color.
  • Allow Combining - alpha management on overlaps.

Use cases

  • Rating star (★) - Points 5, Depth 0.5, filled yellow. Several offset instances for ★★★★★.
  • Sparkle / twinkle - Points 4, Depth 0.1 + Glow = a bright glint. The classic magic / diamond effect.
  • Burst graphic / promo sticker - Points 12-16, Depth 0.3, red/yellow + centered text = "SALE!", "NEW!", typical of ads.
  • Award / medal - a gold star with a dark gold border + Glow = a prize or certification logo.
  • Star of David (hexagram) - Points 6 with Depth ≈ 0.577 (the mathematical ratio) = a symmetrical 6-pointed star.
  • Shuriken / ninja star - Points 4, Depth 0.2, Angle animated in rotation = a flying shuriken.
  • Animated sparkle (transitions) - an sStar with animated Depth and Scale = light glints for transitions or accents.

Tips

  • Angle -90° for an upright star - an sStar at 0° has its first branch on the right. For the classic "point on top" icon, use Angle -90°.
  • Depth = 0.38 for a regular 5-pointed star - the classic mathematical ratio that produces the star perceived as "equilateral" (golden ratio - approx).
  • Even vs odd Points - odd (3, 5, 7) = a star with its point on top if Angle=-90°. Even (4, 6, 8) = a star that is symmetrical horizontally/vertically.
  • Animate Angle for smooth rotation - a spinning star: Angle 0 → 360 over N frames. Combine with sTransform for orbit + self-rotation.
  • Combine several sStar nodes with offset Angles = a complex sparkle (e.g. two 8-pointed stars 22.5° apart = a 16-ray star pattern).
  • Animated Scale + Depth for a lively star "pulse" (it grows + gets fuller, then comes back).
  • For "organic" stars (uneven points, variations), import an SVG or combine several sStar nodes with sJitter.
