Overview
sNGon is the third primitive shape (after sRectangle and sEllipse). It produces a regular polygon with the number of sides you choose. The same standard options: Fill, Outline, Border Width, Length for write-ons, Angle for rotation.
For irregular polygons or corners with different radii, combine it with sBoolean or import a custom SVG.
Where to find this node
- Effects Library:
Tools > Shape > sNGon - Quick add: right-click in the Node Editor →
Add Tool > Shape > sNGon
Inputs
- No input required - a pure generator.
Setup
Simple hexagonal badge: sNGon (Sides 6) → sRender → Merge 2D FG Honeycomb pattern: sNGon (Sides 6) → sGrid → sRender → Merge Shield: sNGon (Sides 5, high Border Width) → sRender → Glow → Merge Screen Warning triangle: sNGon (Sides 3, yellow Fill, Angle 0°) → sRender → Merge
Controls tab
- Sides
- Number of sides of the polygon. 3 = triangle, 4 = square (a diamond depending on the Angle), 5 = pentagon, 6 = hexagon, 8 = octagon. Beyond 12-15, it looks close to a circle (sEllipse would be more appropriate).
- Width / Height
- Dimensions of the polygon. Width = Height for a regular polygon. Different values = a squashed / stretched polygon.
- Angle
- Rotation around the center. Important to orient a triangle or pentagon "flat" vs "on its point".
- Offset (X / Y)
- Position of the center.
- Solid
- On = filled. Off = outline only.
- Border Width
- Outline thickness.
- Border Style
- Corner style: Bevel, Round, Miter (extended sharp point).
- Cap Style
- Ends of the outline when Length < 1: Flat, Round, Square.
- Length
- Length of the stroke (0 to 1). Animate it for a write-on animation of the polygon outline.
Style tab
- Fill Color - the fill color.
- Border Color - the outline color.
- Allow Combining - alpha handling on overlaps.
Use cases
- Hexagonal badges (game UI) - Sides 6 with a Border Width = an achievement element, an equipment slot. A classic in video games / tech dashboards.
- Shield - Sides 5 or 6, Angle set for the point at the top = a defense / protection shield icon.
- Warning triangle - Sides 3, yellow with a black border = a caution sign.
- Honeycomb pattern - Sides 6 + sGrid → a tiled hexagonal pattern. Futuristic tech backgrounds, sci-fi backdrops.
- Polygon frames for photos - sNGon with Solid OFF + a high Border Width = hexagonal / octagonal frames to showcase portraits or logos.
- Geometric logo - a pentagon, hexagon or octagon as the base of a modern logo. Combine with sBoolean for negative shapes.
- Decorative motion design elements - polygons spinning through sTransform in the background or as a visual accent.
Tips
- Angle to orient point vs flat - a triangle at 0° has its point on the right. Angle 90° = point at the top. Angle -90° = point at the bottom. Essential for warning / shield icons.
- Hexagon = 30° for a flat orientation - a 6-sided sNGon at 0° has its points left and right. Angle 30° = flat on top/bottom (the standard honeycomb orientation).
- Sides 4 ≠ sRectangle - a 4-sided sNGon = a diamond (a square rotated by 45°). For a square aligned with the frame, use sRectangle with Width = Height.
- High Sides (> 20) ≈ a circle - at that point, use sEllipse, which is faster and has more arc options.
- Border Style Round for a soft design, Miter for a precise technical look.
- Animate Sides dynamically - Sides animated from 3 to 20 → a smooth morph from triangle to circle. A strong visual effect in motion design.
- For asymmetric polygons (e.g. an irregular pentagon), combine several sNGon nodes + sBoolean or import an SVG.
