A speed ramp in DaVinci Resolve takes a lot of clicks

In DaVinci Resolve, a speed ramp goes through the retime controls. You add speed points, open the curve, drag handles, and start all over again on the next clip.

SpeedRamp Lite does the ramp for you. You choose whether your clip speeds up at the start or at the end, and the plugin handles the curve.

How it works

  1. Decide how long your clip should be.
  2. Turn it into a compound clip.
  3. Drop SpeedRamp Lite on the compound clip.
  4. Choose the In curve or the Out curve.
  5. Add motion blur once you like the result (DaVinci Resolve Studio only).

If playback struggles, switch on proxy mode, or right-click the clip and turn on Render Cache Fusion Output (render cache has to be enabled in the Playback menu). You will probably need it.

What you get

The SpeedRamp Lite plugin (a .drfx file), free.

What you need

DaVinci Resolve, free version or Studio. SpeedRamp Lite works in both. The only difference: motion blur is a DaVinci Resolve Studio feature, so with the free version you get the speed ramp without motion blur.

  1. Double-click the .drfx file. DaVinci Resolve opens and installs it.
  2. Check that SpeedRamp Lite shows up in your Fusion effects. If it doesn't, restart DaVinci Resolve.

Want more control?

SpeedRamp Lite gives you an In or Out ramp on a compound clip. Speed Ramp Pro 2 goes straight on the clip, with no compound clip, and adds mid clip ramps, sliders for speed and duration, the speed curve shown on your image and presets.

FAQ

Is it really free?

Yes. SpeedRamp Lite is free, and it stays free.

Do I need a compound clip?

Yes. SpeedRamp Lite works on a compound clip. If you want to drop the effect straight on your clip, that's what Speed Ramp Pro 2 does.

Does it work with the free version of DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. SpeedRamp Lite works with the free version of DaVinci Resolve. You just won't have motion blur, which is only available in DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Playback is slow. What do I do?

Switch on proxy mode, or turn on Render Cache Fusion Output on the clip. A speed ramp asks DaVinci Resolve to calculate new frames, so a cache makes playback smooth.

I have a problem. What do I do?

Write to me from the contact page of the site. I answer every message myself.
