Edit Page Connector

By Kriss Norde

The Edit Page Connector links the Fusion page to the matching clip on the Edit timeline of DaVinci Resolve. It gives direct access to the timeline clip as a source for compositing, and sends the result back to the timeline. A seamless round-trip workflow inside Resolve.

Overview

When you open the Fusion page on a timeline clip, the Edit Page Connector is typically there automatically as the MediaIn (the Edit clip). You can also add it manually to access other clips of the timeline.

Unlike a classic Loader, the connector refers to a timeline clip (transitions, in/out points, retime applied in Edit), not just a raw source file. Edit stays in charge of what you receive.

Where to find this node

  • Effects Library: Tools > Resolve Connect > Edit Page Connector
  • Present as the MediaIn by default when you open the Fusion page on a timeline clip.

Edit ↔ Fusion workflow

Edit → Fusion
The timeline clip (with its in/out points, retime, transitions) is the Fusion input. The compositing is applied to that clip.
Fusion → Edit
The compositing result replaces the clip in the Edit timeline. Normal playback in the timeline with the compositing included.
Full pipeline
Edit (cut, in/out, retime) → Fusion (compositing) → Color (grading) → Deliver.

Setup

Standard Edit + Fusion workflow:
[Edit page]
Clip A (in/out, transitions)
↓ (open Fusion on this clip)
[Fusion page]
Edit Page Connector (= Clip A) → Compositing → MediaOut
                                                ↓
[Edit page]
Clip A now replaced by the Fusion composite

Multi-clip Fusion (rare):
[Fusion page]
Edit Page Connector (clip A) ─┐
                              ├── Merge → MediaOut
Loader (other clip) ───────────┘

Use cases

  • Compositing integrated into the timeline - compositing done directly on the Edit clip with its timeline settings, without export/re-import.
  • Effects on a clip with an Edit retime - a retime applied in Edit (slow-mo, speed ramp) is respected in Fusion.
  • Discreet cleanup - wire removal, retouching, light VFX integration directly on the Edit clip.
  • Per-clip titles / motion graphics - add a custom Fusion title on an Edit clip without duplicating the clip elsewhere.
  • Standard video workflow - for most projects without heavy VFX, the connector is the default Resolve workflow.

Tips

  • Present by default - most of the time there is no need to add it manually. When you open Fusion on an Edit clip, MediaIn = an implicit Edit Page Connector.
  • Timeline in/out respected - the connector only gives access to the in/out frames of the Edit clip. To access content outside of them, the clip must be extended on the timeline.
  • Edit retime applied upstream - if the clip has an Edit retime, Fusion receives the already retimed clip. To retime in Fusion, turn off the Edit retime first.
  • Color page after Fusion - the Fusion result feeds the Color page through the Color Page Connector. Standard workflow.
  • Different from a real Loader - a classic Loader points to a raw file and ignores the timeline. The connector respects the timeline. Choose based on what you need.
  • For compositing with free access to the source (without respecting the timeline in/out), use a Loader on the source file instead of the connector.
